Places and hearts – #9 The Community : Offline, Paris

The Community : Offline is a collective-run art space, that opened its doors in 2016 in the heart of the Château d’Eau neighborhood in Paris. The Community was born from a shared desire to encourage dialogue between creatives representing different disciplines by proposing them a multidisciplinary platform to exchange ideas.

Is „home“ the place where you’ve been born?

The Community : Offline
Home is a place to which you have a sentimental attachment to. We can have several homes in the past, present and future.

What do you see and feel when you look out of the window?

The Community : Offline
Paris. The French and non-French Parisians. Our extended community. There is also a dog pissing in front of our door (we forgive him). A fresh teenager checking herself out from the mirrors on our wall. The newspaper kiosk guy at his usual spot (since the past two decades). The nice Serbian lady arranging her exotic products on the shelves. Our neighbouring hairsalon’s owner observing the street. The scooter guy borrowing bike line to get past the traffic jam. It’s a lot for one look but it’s true. It’s Paris.

How would your best friend (partner/visitors, guests) describe your rooms?

The Community : Offline
“Visiting the rooms of the community is like sitting at your best friends‘ table for an evening dinner listening to the crazy stories of that artist friend you always wanted to hear. Artistic unity for the community.” – Grégoire Marino

KubaParis
How do you decide what artist you exhibit?

The Community : Offline
Collectively.

KubaParis
Your favorite art space?

The Community : Offline
Is it arrogant to say our own? It’s our child.

KubaParis
Why do we need independent art spaces?

The Community : Offline
Independent art spaces work with their own set of rules and our curatorial decisions are a reflection of our personal interests. We want to offer alternative views. It’s also about heterogeneity. Independent might bring fresh air or open a chance for renewal. Sometimes, it might also be more fun.

KubaParis
What means independence for you?

The Community : Offline
We all want to be independent and at the same time we all want to belong to a community. The Community wants to support independent projects and enhance collaboration within communities.

KubaParis
For what The Community stands for?

The Community : Offline
The eight founding members of The Community believe in creative openness and social cross-cultural exchange, and strive to function as mediators within different audiences and communities. It’s about exploration and collaboration, inclusion and meaningfulness. Transparency.

Something you‘ve always wanted to say?
