Text

Press release Caroline Mauxion digs into her own physical memories, notably of long orthopedic treatments, to address the body and its weight. Though the weight of pain is very present, she also looks at the weight of desire on a body, like a workaround for its underlying physical sensations. Through a collection of photographs and sculptures, the artist tries to capture her physical sensations. Organic, tinted plaster shapes are connected by thin metal rods. These precarious structures stay up through a shared form-based balancing act. Though these rods have an orthopedic quality that’s familiar to the artist, they also make up the skeleton of these friable elements. The photographs show fragments of bodies through a combination of photographic images and materials like silicone, plaster or glass. The artist also brings some of her photographs to life by transferring them onto plaster slabs that are hollowed out, broken or creased from being imprinted with paper. Some of these image-sculptures are flat tint watercolours, photographed as close-ups while the paper was still wet. The watercolour hues and the paper’s texture seem to create a skin for the image on the plaster. The exhibition therefore showcases a series of pieces that evoke and summon the possibilities of our senses.
