The works of the German and Czech artists in this transnational exhibition revolve around oral tradition, the legendary – in short: they deal with myths. Many a legend that originated in the Bohemian Forest has spread in the past to neighbouring areas, the Upper Palatinate or the Bavarian Forest, and vice versa. As the place of the Drachenstich (dragon stabbing), Furth im Wald, in particular, has a century-old folk legend that is known far beyond the town's borders.
Although concrete references to legendary stories and traditions from the border region are made in the exhibition, the participating artists are chiefly interested in dealing with mythologies in a universally aesthetic way. Mythical stories give rise to ideas and visions; their claim to universal validity and truth does not have to be subject to the limitations of reason-based logos. Myths can therefore be particularly dealt with in the field of aesthetics.
