Text

OUTSIDEIN CHEVALIER is both, a traditional art exhibition and the naissance of a new fashion label at the same time. Conceptualized by Offenbach’s Hochschule für Gestaltung’s graduate Isabell Hofmann and current student Un-Zu Ha-Nul Lee, the conceived brand OUTSIDEIN CHEVALIER presents its Inaugural collection Inaugural S/S22 Guardian 1004 on August 17. "Behind OUTSIDEIN CHEVALIER are designers and artists Isabell Hofmann and Un-Zu Ha-Nul Lee, two friends who met during their studies and have now made their dream of their own label come true. Together, they present their first collection (Guardian 1004) of clothing and accessories that offer their wearers protection and peaceful armor against the pitfalls of today's world: the obsession with optimization, the hectic pace of life, and narrow-mindedness. 1004 is pronounced chunsa (천사, meaning angel) in Korean. Become your own Guardian Angel, too." Born in 1990, artist Isabell Hofmann's work focuses on the installation of spaces within spaces, using all-over patterning, perforation and transparency to create a new relationship between inside and outside and focuses on the social aspects of the materials used. In the Guardian 1004 collection, silhouettes of Vichy check fabric represent the necessary closedness and simultaneous permeability of an intact second skin. Color and structure bring to mind a romanticized image of chivalry, heraldry, chain mail and jester's robe. Thereby creating delicate, fluttering textile armor of textile is created for the collection. Un-Zu Ha-Nul Lee, born in 1992, works at the intersection of fashion and art.Lee’s installations explore the relation of spaces and the human body in dreamlike scenes she creates through playfully arranging forms and imprints of bodies with fabrics and silicone. The choice of silicone, characteristic of Lee’s work, fascinates the beholder by evoking the repulsiveness of the uncanny of something neither organic, nor artificial. In the Guardian 1004 collection, she shows how skin and clothing are not merely molded surfaces without content, but instead form a reality of their own, where inside and outside meet, intersect, and merge. In their materiality, skin and clothes provide information about bodies formerly or in the future housed and are at the same time mediums of social engravings.
