In an ongoing intervention, Iida-Simon occupies a desolate house in the Finnish countryside. With the weeds and vermins residing in the house, they scold the ugly beasts of large-scale agriculture and dig their roots deeper into the ashy ground.Text
When Ammi Lundell locked the doors to her house in the countryside of Åland the last time in the 1930s, a small crack beneath the door was left open. Through the years to come, this tiny glitch has served as a passage. Weeds started, like they always do, push their roots through the gap and slowly spread their stems across the floor and up the walls. What was once culture, the weeds inhabited and made theirs.
This intervention is part of Iida-Simon’s research on Superweeds, herbicide-resistant weeds that have started to appropriate gene sequences from genetically modified crops.
Part of the intervention is also a sound installation by Jorunn and Jacob Lavonius.
