Apartments are arranged in such a way that buyers can imagine they can live here. Nothing in the apartment can suggest a specific gender, profession or interests of the residents. The furniture should be standard, classic, and the colors neutral. Impersonal, but cozy. Since staging is only for a short period of time, cheap dummy furniture and equipment are often used for the arrangement. Jan Domicz reaches for them in his series of Diptychs (home staging). They consist of flat dummies of household appliances purchased in a specialist store, manufactured especially for staging purposes. However, the artist pairs them with real devices that were used in his family home not long time ago. They look at each other in a slightly distorted mirror image. Renderings and staging create an image of a product and space for sale, they are tools in the service of consumerism. Following the principle "you are what you buy", they serve us some better version of themselves. They create an image of life that we can then imitate. Because they create a "make-believe" world, it's easy for inconsistencies or funny illogicalities to arise. Domicz sees yet another potential in them. He notes parallels between the staging of apartments for the needs of the real estate market and the way an art gallery or contemporary museum operate. Each exhibition is like a new staging of a given space trying to "sell itself". An artist is just like another tenant of an apartment. The gallery is undergoing a series of exhibition changes. By mocking renderings and staging, Domicz does not laugh at them so much as he would like them to become laboratories of revolutionary change. The artist recommends paying attention to the construction of an apartment building few meters from the gallery.
