"The Heydays" stages a speculative situation where the artist recalls future fantasies of the past. Friezes and reliefs with motifs drawn from architectural decorations and vanitas paintings from the 17th century have been painstakingly carved out of OSB boards. Traditional craftsmanship meets the contemporary in a material consisting of pressed together fragments, typically associated with modern construction. An excavation site and viewpoint - subject to archaeological investigation if you will - where tools and devices for carving, breaking, and dusting off have been hidden away. Objects seek permission and fragments emerge, always already interwoven with and dependent on others; wood flakes and glue, compressed under heat and pressure, schizochronal lion's paw handles, building permits, and reminders of the mortality of all things and everyone, suggest that our worlds are constant renovation projects. Existence is characterized by retrieval, contagious stickiness, and practical disorder, where things carry weight of significance, attraction, and traces of influence. And establishes dependencies. One's bread, another's death, sharpened and hardened Mora knives and antenna swords, prostheses and glue, declare: death aligns, the ticking communication of the death clock. It is a reenactment of the past from a position where time has slipped away - something has passed, amnesic, and death stumbles into the room, delayed and intoxicated by yesterday's festivities. But no one has been here for years. From the future, they whisper about the past, the dawn of glory days. Camilla Edström Ödemark (b.1985, Åland) engages in a multifaceted artistic practice that spans sculpture, drawing, video, and installation.
