Text

Industrial Music An exhibition by Andrzej Steinbach The exhibition will run from September 12 to October 11, 2020. fructa space, Leonrodstraße 89A, 80636 Munich, Germany On the occasion of its first participation in VARIOUS OTHERS, and in cooperation with Briefing Room, Brussels, fructa space presents an exhibition featuring works by Andrzej Steinbach. The starting point of ‘Industrial Music’ is a doorframe from the former Registration Authority for Foreign Nationals in Leipzig. Employing an audio pickup and a sound pressure transducer, the artist is making this object chime. It sounds something like this: Cřc. R. r. r. r. R. R. r. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. r. r. r. r. r. er. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. R. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. r. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. Drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. drrrrr. r. r. R. r. r. r. r. rrrrrrrrrrrrerrrrerrřrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrřrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrřřrřrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrřrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrx On the left side of the room is a piece depicting the figure of a construction worker. The image is based on a photograph by Alexander Michailowitsch Rodchenko from 1924, that portrays the Soviet poet and futurist Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky. A 25-minute black-and-white silent film can be seen in the back room. Three hundred used and bent nails are held in front of the camera with the left hand, each for a few seconds, in rapid succession. The fourth and final work is a dressing gown sewn in 1944 from a parachute of the US Army. Due to the lack of consumables during and after World War II, many used parachutes were collected from the battlefields and sewn into clothing. Swords into plowshares, parachutes into garments. Briefing Room is a designated location in Brussels where aliens and emissaries can meet for negotiations, conferences and artistic presentations. The first exhibition ‘Alone again’ with Jana Schulz, Manuel Stehli and others is postponed to the end of 2020. The program will be organized by Andrzej Steinbach and Steffen Zillig. Andrzej Steinbach, born 1983 in Czarnków, Poland, grew up in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz), lives and works in Berlin.
