FIVEROOMFLAT. ხუთოთახიანი
Artist curated group show hosted in old Tbilisi apartment. Georgia, 2022.
The flat hosting the group show by artists: Ana Gzirishvili, Salome Dumbadze, Nina Kintsurashvili, Lado Lomitashvili, and Qeu Meparishvili has served multiple functions for the five artists. For some it was a studio space and a storage, for others a temporary shelter and a safe space for discussions and thought sharing for all the exhibiting participants.
In places, with a lack of art institutions, artists come together to search for alternative ways to support each other's practices and evolve individually. Thus, affordable urban spaces become vital for the local art scene. The government's dysfunctional housing politics, unexpected acceleration of gentrification, and the economic crisis brought by the pandemic and the war in the region has caused the disappearance of such spaces not only for artists but also for citizens.
The exhibition is a collective action of marking the space with artworks as a reaction to the invasive gentrification. Fiveroomflat is a translation of the dialogue between participating artists as well as a materialisation of their togetherness.
