Kunsthaus Erfurt MEANS OF ESCAPE A group exhibition curated by Kristin Wenzel The exhibition takes up the idea of Konkrete Utopie (Concrete Utopia), a term coined by the philosopher Ernst Bloch, who considers utopia as a real opportunity to change society. Bloch subverts the fact that a utopia is always inherently unrealizable through the use of the adjective “concrete.” If Konkrete Utopie represents a process of realization for Bloch, then art can be viewed as a concrete utopian practice and artistic action as a seismograph of social processes. Through performance, painting, installation, drawing, sculpture, and film, the participating artists grant us insights into a daydream that—alongside wishes, reveries, and longings—succeeds in articulating a conception of the future that can teach us how to hope.
