The ‘Cantabile’ in opera is a recitative, being the first and slower part of an aria. It contrasts the word ‘furioso’ meaning furious, frantic, wild. Therefore ‘Cantabile furioso’ describes the sound of the file (die Feile). It tells the story of the captive, who desperately, determinedly and hopefully grinds the iron teeth on the prison bars. It is the noise that accompanies the escape from an imposed, unbearable imprisonment towards freedom.
