Monday Gelato constitutes a temporary showcase that presents selected positions of contemporary performance.
With Monday Gelato, a series of events was created in summer 2019 to present and discuss current developments in performance art in Karlsruhe. On three selected dates between May and July, Monday Gelato transforms a project space in Karlsruhe’s Südweststadt into a temporary showcase that presents and relates selected performance positions by a young generation of artists from Karlsruhe and other european cities. Monday Gelato invites the audience to discuss and evaluate what performance could hold in place as an art form in the face of contemporary reality.
While the rise and the entanglement of new phenomena in the spheres of the technological, the political and the media enabled a new visibility for diverse lifeforms and identities and led way to an increasing integration of communities, many of these advances remain confined to virtual space or large metropolitan areas. At the same time, inherited power structures do not only experience a bewildering persistence but even gain new acceptance. The ongoing transformation of social reality thus offers both, a cause for affection and revelation, as well as an enduring source of pestering distress.
Many of these moments are strongly sensed and deeply shape personal worlds, but as power structures they remain latent and seem to be not directly graspable.
Monday Gelato turns to performance to create a communal forum that explores, opposes embraces, and finds expressions for different dimensions of today’s social reality. Together with artists based in different European cities as well as local artists from Karlsruhe, a temporary place of mutual exchange is created – as low-key but exciting as visiting an ice cream parlour.
