Titled FEUERTEUFEL, Sophie Constanze Polheim’s solo exhibition at Kunstraum Ortloff in Leipzig brings together sculptures, textile works, video fragments, readymades and a collection of essays. The neologism Feuerteufel (ger.) describes arsonists and links the gesture of setting sth. on fire to the figure of the devil. It direct translates as firedevil - a term that relates to fire whirls which occasionally occur during intense wildfires. The exhibition forms an associative structure which centers around questions regarding the ambivalent relationships between humans and fire in our present time. What does it mean to set a fire, and what are the consequences?
Sophie Constanze Polheim is based in Leipzig, Germany. She studied in the Class for Installation and Space at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig and the TXT Department at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.
