Samuel Fischer-Glaser & Angela Stiegler – 3-Zimmer-Wohnung … In doing so, we can assume that what has taken shape over the last months is not diaristic, or biographical, it is not a self-reflexive critique, or an engagement with materials which would presume a certain fidelity to them. Instead of these realisms, there is an (almost) empty theatrical set: A low stack of two objects sits on the floor. The first, a 1920s two-basin sink made from porcelain. It had two legs, which were broken off. The form of this sink, minus its legs, was re-created using soft materials. The measurements of the flat surfaces were approximated in fabric, then these pieces were stitched together by hand. The resulting form was stuffed with polyester filling and placed atop the sink. This is the second object. An end table whose parts are composed of dark amber PVC used for curtains in cold storage facilities. The table sides - consisting of two halves based on pre-existing designs for backs of chairs - are perforated on their edges and sewn together by a bright blue laundry line in cross-stitch. The material is soft and supported by a metal structure. The lamp is a semi-translucent tower made of resin. It is a series of castings of a porcelain figure which originally served as a jar for storing potatoes. The porcelain figure was itself an anthropomorphized bag of potatoes. The multiple castings are stacked one on top of the other and attached together. They are hollow and illuminated from inside. A ceiling fan has two sets of coveralls hanging from its blades. One is grey, the other black and red. The belt of the red suit serves to fasten it to one of the fan blades, the grey suit is insulated. The sleeves of both suits meet on one of the blades that they are fitted over. The fan moves slowly, barely animating the suits. 12 photos of shoes are affixed with gloves. A story accompanies this arrangement: Both the shoes and gloves were lost on the street. The shoes were photographed, the gloves were taken. A frieze made of repeating black and white photo prints showing the bottom corner of a room. On the floor sits a half-eaten pear with morsels scattered around it. The prints are alternating portrait and landscape formats invoking a meander. A story also accompanies this work: the pear was eaten by a mouse in a former residence of the artist. Two paintings show interiors of apartment buildings, an empty bathroom and an inhabited staircase. The paintings are executed in a perfunctory way, without an excess of attention to detail. Oddly behaving furniture, decor without bones. A spectral absence, in rooms, clothes, and unfinished food. Semlerova rezidence’s staircase depicts the view down a flight of stairs. Ascending these is a large, heavily patterned figure. This is the spectral presence. The three-bedroom apartment is a haunted house.
