Liza Lacroix (*1988 Montreal, lives and works in New York) recently studied at Hunter College in New York, where she completed her MFA program in 2023. The person sitting next to her in his death scene is the artist's first institutional solo exhibition in Europe.
Liza Lacroix's artistic practice encompasses painting, audio, installation, and site-specific interventions. All aspects of her work are interconnected through an interest in power dynamics, intimacy, and the mediation of herself through the lens of art history. Driven by a skeptical love for painting, her criticality towards the medium produces works that are often at odds with themselves. Lacoix's work plays with refusal. Even though she often withholds biographical contextualization, she inserts personal references into her works making them a site of vulnerability. For her exhibition in Gladbeck, the artist is presenting exclusively new works.
