The exhibition Playset gathers artworks by Polam Chan, Alex Parry, Clare Holdstock and Linda Zagidulina, and suggests ideas and themes that already surround us and may set a fort locally where people reclaim their voices to be heard. So playfully appealing to believe that a bigger change can be fought back from the microscale. Looking at the role that culture class named by urban businessman Richard Florida and analysed by artist and writer Martha Rosler can play today, the artworks explore symbols and memories of local experiences from Birmingham to Hong Kong. The artists refer to local supportive community activities (Alex Parry), urban memories of such communities (Polam Chan), recycling overused materials and expanding the status of printing standards for food packaging (Clare Holdstock), and attempting to alienate overused daily emotions (Linda Zagidulina).
The group exhibition is a part of Corner Shoppppppp of Arte, a nomadic pop-up centre that hosted an exhibition and 3 workshops from the 24th through 27th of November. The project supports learning experiences outside academic systems and how we can seek such experiences locally (in subjects related to mental health, creative solutions, and design for a sustainable future). It took place at AMP Gallery, 1 Acorn Parade, London SE15 2TZ.
