In the exhibition Becoming, Clara Toksvig and Sara Mirkhani investigate the relationship between nature and the body through the ceramic material. Bodies are part of the earth’s cyclical movement and in an endless cycle of life, we are connected to each other and to the earth. In the exhibition this idea manifests through abstraction of, among other things, plant seeds, cocoons and shells, which have in common that they are all vessels. The vessels are temporary bodies where organisms reside before passing on from one stage of the cycle to another. Here, the vessels become symbols of metamorphosis, representing what is, what is to come, what has been. The exhibition presents a series of ceramic sculptures that are sporadically placed in piles of soil and tubs with water. Here, the ceramic material meets the soft soil. The soil draws references to clay as a material and to life itself. When bodies perish, they are dissolved by the soil, the same soil helps to create new life.
