ryptic (lat.: crypticus, hidden, concealed)
What is cryptic is a membrane. Or what‘s behind the membrane. A membrane between the mundane and the sacred, the profane and the mystical, the seen and the unseen, the code and the message, the symbol and the represented, the translation and the mother tongue. The membranes might dissolve, teeth break open and chambers unveil, uncovering the hidden and shedding new light on the subject.
The show aims to highlight as many aspects of the cryptic as possible. Exploring a universe that plays with tensions and narratives, it brings together diverse artworks on spirituality, profane versions of the cryptic, liminality, physicality, pseudo-science, conspiracies and metaverses. Throughout the artworks there is an open discussion about the state of the works and how they imprint the ‚cryptic‘. Some things are just there, exposed, underlying the paradox or representing the generic and human aspect of the concept. Other themes are hidden between layers of metaphors, fulfilling the enigma implied by the word „cryptic“. In this space, the physical world, metaverses and transcendence collide and sometimes merge.
The collective DoLi was formed by sharing a studio in Plateia Amerikis. Through the close co- working experience, the common ground between the three artists, Tyr, Iro Drosos and Olivia Thaleia, became more and more apparent and the parallels between their works revealed more and more. The show was therefore created through their artist perspective with the aim and desire to honor the preciousness of connections and dialogues between artists. They want to foster an inspiring ground for the participants which can be transmitted to the visitors.
In February 2024, they held their first open studio exhibition and realized that their artistic researches shared another thing in common: The transitional, the intermediate and the in-between. Soon after, when asked to curate an exhibition at okay space, it was clear that the theme would express this body of work, while taking it a step further and finding a concept that would appeal to a wider range of artists to be discovered through an open call.
