20. July - 28. July 2024
Annual Exhibition in Academy of Fine Arts Munich, Germany
In ‘fusing gesture’, Lu Cheng and Sonia Titel explore the dynamic interplay between softness and hardness, stillness and movement, immateriality and materiality. The exhibition focuses on the process of metamorphosis and aesthetic ambivalence as well as the relationship between the human form and its environment.
The exhibited works testify to a play with hybrid body forms and, in their material quality, tell of the transformation of organic matter into inorganic matter. Cheng's ceramic sculptures consist of countless, carefully moulded spines joined together to form biomorphic compositions. The dynamic character of the structures makes the works look like snapshots of an endless growth process, capturing the essence of movement in a state of calm. Titel's sculptural works also made from ceramics complement the fusion of gesture and form. In her work, the boundaries between human and non-human forms become blurred. The leg-like structures and hair-like outgrowths bestow Titel's sculptures with an anthropomorphic presence that manifests itself in a lively, almost mobile quality to the works.
The works by Cheng and Titel are not realistic depictions of existing nature, but rather the result of a broader interpretation of it in its diversity of forms and vibrancy. They dissolve the boundary between natural growth and deliberate creation into a subtle gesture of repetition and variation.
