On either side the river lie
Long fields of barley and of rye,
That clothe the wold and meet the sky;
And thro' the field the road runs by
To many-tower'd Camelot;
~Alfred, Lord Tennyson
The title of the exhibition refers to the legendary castle of King Arthur Pendragon, who, as the tale goes, once ruled medieval Britain.
For hundreds of years, Arthurian tales, those of the Knights of the Round Table or the Holy Grail, were passed from mouth to mouth by troubadours and poets. Always vividly told, the stories changed with each retelling to fit listeners' perceptions of medieval days, while echoing the thoughts and literary tropes of the authors' contemporaries.
Even today, medieval motifs and iconographic references are present in contemporary art. They rely on images of that world to superstructure their own myths and legends, reflecting their own stories, values or problems, while erecting their own Camelot.
The exhibition is a presentation of works whose authors, through references to medieval motifs, tell about their own experiences or depict insights into the modern world.
